Can the wrong glasses prescription worsen your eye condition?

The “myth” that wearing the wrong glasses (meaning your glasses are either too weak or too strong for your eyes) can damage your eyes has been around for a while, but it is actually not true! Like ill-fitting shoes or clothes, glasses with the wrong prescription are simply uncomfortable and do not provide you with the full visual potential that allows you to see properly.

However, this is not the case for a growing child, whose eyes are still developing. If a child’s glasses are under-prescribed or over-prescribed, then it can definitely impair their eyesight, and affect the growth of their eyeballs, leading to eye problems like myopia or amblyopia, also known as a lazy eye. It is absolutely necessary for children to have the correct eye prescription to help them in their vision, slow down myopia, and reduce eye strain.

For adults, the effects may not be as drastic because your eyes ‘learn’ how to adjust to the distances and try to accommodate to the particular situation. This doesn’t cause damage, but it definitely puts a strain on your eyes. This means your eyes have to work much harder to see clearly, and this will often cause headaches, tired eyes, neck pain and even dizziness.
