Many people know that overexposure to the sun’s rays is bad for the skin. But did you know its just as bad for the eyes? Sunglasses are often seen as just accessories, but they actually play a vital role in protecting our eyes and keeping them healthy.

What exactly is UV light?

Ultraviolet (UV) light is electromagnetic radiation emitted from the sun, and is invisible to the human eye. UV light is absorbed by eye cells and tissue, and is generally not harmful. However, too much UV light absorbed by the eye can result in damaging parts of the eye like the cornea, lens and retina.

Long term exposure to UV rays can lead to serious eye diseases like pterygium, a growth on the corner of the eye that grows towards the pupil, cataracts and macular degeneration later in life.

Protection

Just as sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV rays, sunglasses block those same rays from causing serious damage to your eyes.

When choosing sunglasses, look for sunglasses that provide 99% - 100% UVA and UVB protection. This means you are fully protected against the sun’s UV rays. Getting sunglasses from street markets and fashion stores may be cheaper and the designs may be unique, but it does not provide the right amount of protection for your eyes. Also, look for sunglasses that full cover your eyes for maximum protection.

The skin around your eyes, especially your eyelids, are very sensitive to sunlight, and studies have shown that the five to ten per cent of skin cancers are found around the eye area. Wearing UV-protective sunglasses with large lenses that fully cover your eyes not only protects your eyes, but protects your skin as well!
